Hello universe

I am Lily. I care about a lot of things especially my cat.

I care about children’s play and children’s rights. I feel public space should be designed with children’s freedom and wellbeing  in mind and playgrounds shouldn’t be made with adult agendas.

I studied Fine Art at Bath School of Art and Design graduating 2013. My work mostly coincided with my other passion – Play – making a wonderful combination! Much of the work was split into two areas of interest to me – public space and education.

I work with various organisations and my local community. I am a school ‘Play Leader’ and my role was part of a major development of the school’s play opportunities, led by OPAL Outdoor Play and Learning along with PlayPods and training provided by Bristol Children’s Scrapstore. This leadership role led on nicely from my university projects and a dissertation focused around play in school and the need for a mandatory play provision in our education system, which is still, failing too many of our children. An example of this argument, would be improved outdoor play space in schools commissioned by supportive local government with an understanding of importance of children’s play/ children’s rights (article 31) and executed by experienced companies who support the need for risk, varied space, loose parts and landscaping that opens up limitless doors of the playing child. I discussed how obstacles such as the blame culture our media have bred and a fear from school ministers to change a system that many aspects of haven’t developed since the industrial revolution.

I run a youth club at a local cafe for SWALLOW (South West Action for Learning and Living Our Way), which is a charity that supports young people and adults with learning disabilities live a more independent, fulfilled life. I also work at the charity as a Support Worker with adults.
For many years I have tutored Charlotte Smith, a young talented artist from Wells in Somerset, organised fun-days, street play-days, school scrap sessions, curated a children’s exhibition and ran art groups with primary school children.

I have volunteered and been bought in to do projects by our Bath and North East Somerset Play Team, organising and helping out at charity events. I currently work on the Wheels For All team providing specialised bikes for families and adults with disabilities. The Play Team have provided all of my Playwork training and have been extremely supportive of my professional development. I completed a NVQ in Playwork (Level 3) in 2013.
